THE MARKET for container conversion is on the up-and-up, and container suppliers/converters are becoming more regional in their market development focus, according to Steve van Doorn, director of Container Trust.
Southern Africa, with its many underserviced areas, has provided a developmental market for customised containers - probably more so than the more developed countries, where conversion is more opportunistic, Van Doorn added.
The number of people who are buying and converting is now a large percentage of the total number of units sold, he told FTW.
The range of conversions is very widespread, with retail units like spaza shops and telephone centres added to refrigerated containers selling into the agricultural and fishing markets as well as the wholesale/retail sectors.
One current example of this type of developing market is the telephone companies' desire to locate their services in otherwise unserviced areas, according to Van Doorn.
