Container movement at Durban port terminals getting back to normality

Last week was a good week at the terminals at the Port of Durban – an upturn for the better after the movement of containers was at a snail’s pace for 10-days just prior to the Easter holiday break, when problems with the new Navis port management programme hammered the container road transport industry.

According to Kevin Martin, MD of Freightliner and chairman of the Durban Harbour Carriers Association (DHCA) the delay to trucks getting through the Pier 2 Durban container terminal was down to a little under three-hours – a vast improvement on the up to 24-hour delays of the bad period.

“We’re getting back towards normality,” he told FTWOnline. “There’s still a long way to go, but at least we have seen a better week.

“We’re getting back to the 2 400-2 500 container moves in a 24-hour shift, and the terminal management seem to be coping with the Navis problem.”
