As the need for cost-effective electronic communication between logistics and clearance systems rises, a technology solutions company hopes to launch one centralised platform for electronic communications between all parties by early next year. “We are building one centralised system which would not only enable 24/7 communication and submissions between parties, but also create ways in which the process of electronic data interchange (EDI) can be tracked and traced via mobile applications,” said ID Verifications Systems (IVS) director, Marius van Jaarsveld. He told FTW that he expected the system to take another six months to complete. When the company develops new systems, it builds on existing systems used widely for a particular industry – such as customs clearance for airlines and ground handlers – and enables those systems to communicate from one platform, Van Jaarsveld explained. One of the challenges is that systems are so interconnected that if one entity, such as an airline, changes its process flow and system functionality, it has an effect throughout all major operations and system functionalities. “We therefore really have to keep a close eye on the systems evolution as this has a major impact on our customers and their operations,” he said. Currently, IVS handles about 70% to 80% of all the cargo airlines’ electronic customs submissions to the South African Revenue Service (Sars) live from the cargo messaging system. “This has helped the industry to meet its on-time submission requirements far more easily.” Van Jaarsveld said that airlines could log on to the system and check on the status of their submissions at any time. “If there is intervention needed, the system alerts us and we can contact the airline and notify them accordingly.” He added that the benefits of this to the airlines was that it fast-tracked submissions, thus eliminating delays and ensuring compliance.
