Botswana reveals plan to lower import/export costs

Botswana will soon introduce a new Customs Bill with a view to lowering the costs associated with import and export of goods, said the Botswana Unified Revenue Service (Burs).

Burs customs excise manager, Philiso Valashia, announced this in a statement on the Burs website, saying that the process to amend Customs and Excise Duty Act was under way.

“The process of consulting public and private sector stakeholders commenced this week and is expected to be concluded on April 20, whereupon drafting instructions for a Customs Bill will be issued to the attorney general,” he said.

Valashia pointed out that the amendments would increase the competitiveness of local goods in the global markets, while also lowering the cost of goods to local producers and consumers.

“This will be achieved through the introduction of clearer and simpler customs requirements and elimination of procedures that cause delays in the release and clearance processes,” he said.
