South America has recorded a sustainability milestone for the maritime industry after US bulk carrier Infinity Sky stopped at the Port of Callao to take on a biofuels consignment.
The standard-setting bunker load represents the first scalable biofuels supply chain initiative in South America.
It was facilitated by US diversified logistics provide Cargill, in conjunction with Danish and German marine fuel enterprises, Monjasa and Famoil.
The biofuels supply chain operation commenced with Monjasa carrying out the first supply of B30 – a biodiesel blend containing 30% biodiesel derived from sources like palm oil mixed with regular diesel fuel – to Cargill in Peru.
The tanker took on 510 tonnes of B30 in Callao.
This supply was a part of the biofuels logistics expansion in South America and is certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification.
The load has been widely described as underpinning the importance of sustainability and environmental responsibility in maritime fuel consumption.
The successful completion of this biofuels supply operation highlights the commitment of key industry players like Cargill, Monjasa, and Famoil towards promoting the use of biofuels in maritime transport.
