Another airport on the cards for KZN?

The KwaZulu Natal south coast town of Scottburgh could soon see construction on a new airport which is five times the size of Durban’s old Virginia airport, according to a statement by the City of Durban.

The local authority revealed that it had received an “unsolicited proposal” from Seaworld Investment Holdings to redevelop the old Virginia airport site into a housing and commercial site.

“The R6.1-billion development will comprise commercial, hotel, upmarket residential, offices, leisure and related developments. The municipality is not required to fund the development and will only offer its services and expertise in the implementation of bulk infrastructure and services,” reads the statement.

It was further revealed that Seaworld Investment Holdings also planned to build an airport five times the size at Scottburgh on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast. The City of Durban noted that this proposal had been in print media and on the city’s website for comments and input by members of the public, National Treasury, Provincial Treasury and the Auditor General of South Africa as directed by relevant legislation.
