Highway looters are again using the tactic of placing dangerous objects on certain stretches of road.
In the most recent incident thick steel wire was laid across the N1 north of Pretoria to obstruct truck traffic.
At about 1am on Sunday morning a truck in the Hammanskraal area swerved to avoid a car travelling in front that had itself swerved to avoid wire on the road.
Unfortunately the trucker’s attempt to avoid a collision caused his truck to overturn.
A voice message from a transporter said almost instantly people from nearby informal settlements had seized the opportunity to loot the truck’s goods.
“In about 20 minutes they took everything.”
A truck from the same company that was travelling behind the first which had overturned had wire coiling around its wheels, getting entangled in its undercarriage, forcing it to stop.
The message did not say whether this truck too had been pounced upon by the looters.
