As part of a drive for greater gender inclusivity in the transport industry, the Commercial Transport Academy (CTA) is hosting an online dialogue titled “Women in Transport: Unlocking Opportunities for Female Truck Drivers and Couriers”.
The event is scheduled for March 17 from 10h00 to 12h00.
While data indicates that women make up less than 1% of the working driver population in South Africa, in the USA 7% of truck drivers are female, while in Australia this figure rises to 20%, according to Nicci Scott, founder of the CTA.
“The under-representation needs to change,” she says.
The event will cover a range of issues, among them human resource policies that support the development of female freight drivers by overcoming barriers and unconscious bias.
The line-up of industry specialists who will participate in the discussion include the likes of Gavin Kelly, CEO of the Road Freight Association, Garry Marshall, CEO of the SA Express Parcel Association, and Malcolm Stevens, driver manager training at OneLogix.
It has drawn overwhelming support from a wide range of relevant players – from the RFA, Saepa and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport: South Africa (Ciltsa) to Hollard and Standard Bank.
