Hollard Insurance, the City of Tshwane and other stakeholders have joined forces to initiate a solution for key intersection traffic lights during load shedding.
Introducing independent power supply to busy intersections such as the one at the R21 and Nellmapius Drive, was rolled out recently.
Other key intersections in the metro will follow soon, a project statement has said.
At the R21/Nellmapius intersection, backup power from the nearby Route 21 Office Park kicks in when Eskom power is interrupted.
The adopt-a-traffic-light initiative extends a prior project that promoted collaboration between businesses, communities and the municipality to maintain the city's traffic lights.
Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink said the initiative with the office park made sure the capital’s traffic continues to flow when Eskom fails to keep the lights on.
