A 42-year-old truck driver has been arrested for diverting heavy fuel destined for an Eskom power station.
It’s alleged that Phumla Hadebe intended to sell it off at a lower price when he was caught last week and charged in the Bethal Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga for theft and fraud.
The allegation is that he diverted heavy fuel worth R500 000 and sold it for R40 000 when working for a company contracted by Eskom to deliver the fuel to Camden power station in Mpumalanga, a South African Police Services spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, confirmed.
Between March and October this year, 1 618 fuel theft cases have been reported nationwide, Mathe said.
Heavy fuel is used in power stations for electricity production and supply.
