Tanzania’s President, John Magufuli, has announced plans to purchase 800 freight wagons, Chinese news agency Xinhua has reported.
According to the report, refrigerated wagons will be included for transporting perishables such as fruits and vegetables for the country's revived central railway line.
In a live address from Arusha, Magufuli said that the refrigerated wagons would help growers in the country’s northern regions, which are served by the central railway line, to transport their fresh produce to domestic and foreign markets through the Dar es Salaam port.
Launching the revived Dar es Salaam-Tanga-Kilimanjaro-Arusha railway line managed by the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC), Magufuli said that plans were also under way to buy 39 new locomotive engines for the central railway line, the report added.
