INTERFREIGHT (Swaziland) has been re-instated as a clearing and forwarding agent at Swaziland's border post with South Africa at Oshoek.
A majority of South African freight traffic entering Swaziland passes through Oshoek. The decision by the South African Customs and Excise Department to allow Interfreight to resume work as a clearing agent came three months after the South African Department of Finance gave the company 48 hours to cease operations because it was allegedly not properly registered under current rules. The lack of registration put Interfreight at odds with the requirements of the South African Revenue Service.
Upset that a South African clearing agent immediately appeared to do work formerly done by Interfreight, the Swaziland Chamber of Commerce lobbied government officials in South Africa and Swaziland for the freight company's reinstatement. The organisation's executive director, Sibusiso Nsibandze, is seeking rules clarification from South Africa's Revenue Service to prevent future disruptions of freight clearance at the busy border post.
