Return to Cargo Normal Hours at Affected Ports Letter

Publish Date:
12 Sep 2022

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) Director: Customs Border Operations, Ports Of Entry and Customs Compliance has advised that following the wage negotiations dispute, affected ports have returned to normal hours.

“You may already be aware that SARS and its recognised trade unions, the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) and the Public Servants Association of South Africa (PSA), have been in a protracted wage dispute for some time. The strike action that ensued as a result led to an adjustment of cargo operating hours at some of our ports,” he said.

“As SARS endeavours to minimise any potential impact on the free flow of cross-border movement of trade, we also aim to reduce the negative consequences the strike has had on our economy. Our desire is to continue to be at the service of traders and travellers as best we can.”

With both trade unions having suspended the strike action to allow further engagement and agreement with SARS management, cargo operating hours at all ports have reverted to normal, as they were before the strike action effective from 09 September 2022. “Should there be any changes related to the suspension of the strike, we will communicate this with you.”
