One of the world's biggest multi-purpose vessels designed to carry both general cargo and containers, the Amber Lagoon, has begun calling on Port Elizabeth.
The ship, which is one of three similar vessels built in China, departed from the Port of Hamburg, Germany on December last year on her maiden voyage, which included an 18-hour stop in Port Elizabeth. Registered to Macs Maritime Shipping, she has a Polish crew of 24 and will sail between the United Kingdom, Europe and South Africa.
The 31916- ton ship is 192,25 metres long and, in addition to general cargo, can carry up to 1486 TEUs (six metre equivalent units), of which 686 can be accommodated on deck. She has one 180 ton crane and three 40 ton cranes.
The Amber Lagoon loaded steel, heavy machinery and containers in the Port of Port Elizabeth. She continued her maiden voyage to Durban the same evening.
