FRESH PRODUCE Terminals will spend around R2 million in Durban on upgrading the cold store’s internal structure to cater mainly for improved protocols pertaining to the sterilisation of fruit for markets like Japan. In Maputo about R1 million will be committed to plant improvement. Looking back on a longer than usual season, so much so, there has been limited time to switch off the plants for maintenance, MD Ronnie Kingwill expresses some concerns about the overall cold store scenario in Durban. “There is nothing wrong with the quality of their cooling but the concern centres around the logistics in getting the fruit out in time. This has introduced a major delay factor in the total chain and we are busy on an interface with these various stores to introduce alternative systems and controls.”
