Shipping into and out of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) takes patience and money – and plenty of both. The country is ranked 183rd out of 190 in the World Bank Ease of Doing Business index. Its best position on the scorecard is 54th for starting a business.During the year under review, the DRC opened a one-stop-shop for the registration of new businesses, among other business-related reforms. For “Trading across borders” it is third from the bottom at 187th – marginally better than enforcing contracts (178th).There has been some improvement, however, with the participation of private companies in the terminal handling process at the Port of Matadi, reducing cargo handling time by improving the quality of service, according to the 2020 Doing Business report.
