THE 77 000 ton bulk carrier Maratha Mission last week discharged the largest consignment of maize ever handled in Cape Town.
The 63 000 tons were loaded in the United States
by charterers Cargill International of Geneva and shipped by SA Marine.
The handling of this massive shipment was a team effort by ourselves, local agents Fairship, Portnet
and Spoornet, SA Marine CEO Jan Rabie told FTW.
The maize is destined for the Western Cape to be used as animal feed.
SA Marine Corporation, operating as Safbulk, was previously part of the Safmarine group but is in the process of being acquired by Capital Finance of Greece. According to Rabie the sales agreement should be finalised shortly.
The Maratha Mission, a panamax vessel 245 metres long, discharged at H Berth, the deepest dry cargo berth in Duncan Dock. Special arrangements had to be made to berth the giant ship.
