Construction has started on the R600 million Farrier Business Park at Westown in Shongweni, west of Durban, with pet food manufacturer Montego Pet Nutrition secured as the anchor tenant.
The business and logistics park is located about 1.5km from the N3 via the Shongweni Interchange, according to developer Fundamentum Development Company.
The investment comprises approximately R100 million for infrastructure and a further R500 million for buildings as construction progresses. The park will target logistics and supply chain operators as well as businesses serving the food, home, automotive, fashion and energy sectors.
The first serviced land platforms are expected to be ready for development in the first quarter of 2027 with the first completed buildings anticipated to be available for occupation in early 2028. Stefanutti Stocks Coastal Civil is undertaking the construction works.
Montego Pet Nutrition Managing Director Johan van Jaarsveld said the location and opportunity to tailor its facility informed the company’s decision.
“We’ve been able to work directly with the developers to shape the facility around our needs – there’s room to grow and the direct N3 access keeps us centrally placed in our delivery network and safely accessible for our staff. This ideally positions Montego to scale with the growth we’re seeing in the KwaZulu-Natal market over the next few years,” he said.
Fundamentum CEO Carlos Correia described the development as the next phase of Westown’s expansion.
“It is an important next step in bringing the broader vision for Westown to life,” he said.
Absa is supporting the phased development of the precinct, which has progressed from the opening of the Westown Square retail centre to the business and logistics park.
Options for businesses include serviced sites, turnkey sectional title buildings, purpose-built rental premises and joint venture partnerships. According to the developer, property within the managed precinct will be held through a perpetual, automatically renewable 99-year lease structure registered in the Deeds Office.
