CMES and RINA explore AI-driven vessel operations

Artificial intelligence applications in vessel maintenance, energy efficiency and operational decision-making will be explored under an agreement between China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES) and ship classification and engineering consultancy group RINA.

The memorandum of understanding establishes a framework for cooperation on fleet safety, risk management, carbon emissions and regulatory compliance, according to an October 12 announcement by RINA.

Predictive maintenance, which uses operational data to help identify potential equipment problems before failures occur, is among the applications to be examined. Other areas include alternative fuels, automation and smart shipping technologies.

Technical exchanges, research and knowledge sharing will also form part of the cooperation, which builds on an existing relationship between the companies, RINA said.

CMES operates across the oil tanker, liquefied natural gas, dry bulk, roll-on/roll-off and container shipping sectors. It operates and manages more than 380 vessels with a combined deadweight tonnage exceeding 55 million tonnes, according to a statement.
