Australia launches gas-powered vessel project

Powering cargo ships through compressed gas has prompted the Australian company investing in the venture, Global Energy Ventures (H2), to extend its innovation by including hydrogen vessels.

Launched earlier today, GEV’s H2 Ship project aims to manufacture vessels that could hold 2000 tonnes of compressed hydrogen - and approval for the concept is currently being sought from the American Bureau of Shipping.

Quoted in a Singaporean sea freight magazine, GEV executive director Martin Carolan said: “Over the course of 2020, the company has been closely monitoring the growing support for hydrogen as a clean energy source.

“In our view, the application of GEV’s compressed hydrogen vessel will be very competitive against other marine transport options, particularly to Australia’s regional Asia Pacific customers.”

According to Splash 247, “the ship and its cargo system are in the patent process” and “the containment system will include ambient temperature hydrogen at a target pressure of 3 600 psi (or 250 bar)”.
