Technology should never be introduced just for the sake of it, but rather to deliver solutions for very specific problems. That was the advice to the project sector from entrepreneur and innovator Jake Loosararian, founder of Gecko Robotics, during a recent webinar.Loosararian developed his first wall-climbing robot while still a student after being challenged to come up with a solution to address manual infrastructure inspections that are slow, often inaccurate, but also extremely dangerous.Today the company is a multi-million dollar US-headquartered company that operates robots on projects all around the world, maintaining and protecting some of the most critical infrastructure, delivering faster and safer solutions than ever before.Technology is increasingly being introduced in the project logistics sector where huge amounts of data are incentivising digitisation processes daily. While many in the project sector maintain that some of their processes and operations remain too complex for digitisation, the fact is that new tools are being developed all the time to streamline operations.“Technology can make all the difference. If one looks at how our wall-climbing robots have turned the tide on infrastructure inspection, for example, they are collecting 40 000 times more data, ten times faster than what humans were doing,” says Loosararian. “For it to work, however, it needs to be the right technology for the processes it is addressing. That is where the difference lies.”For him innovation should always be about improving processes and adding value to the overall organisation.
