Paris-based ground handling company Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) has extended operations at OR Tambo International Airport after securing contracts from Lufthansa and Swiss World Cargo.
According to information seen by Freight News, the contracts will make WFS the second-largest ground handler at OR Tambo.
It is estimated that the two three-year contracts will handle about 23 000 tonnes of cargo a year.
In order to accommodate new capacity required to fulfil its contractual obligations to the two airlines, WFS has leased a 3 600-square-metre (sqm) warehouse, acquired additional handling equipment, and expanded its workforce.
The move marks another major step in WFSs’ operational expansion at the airport, coming as it does after it last year built a 350-sqm facility focusing on pharmaceutical cargo at the airport.
